Sycomore reimagines vetiver not as a rooty brute but as a ghost drawn in smoke and green ink. Where most woody-aquatics or grassy soliflores shout their raw materials, this 2008 Chanel Les Exclusif cuts vetiver with cypress and pink pepper, turning the familiar note into something airy and upright. It belongs to that moment when perfumers began sanding the corners off aromatics - think Terre d’Hermès’s mineral blast or Encre Noire’s dark ink - but Sycomore stays drier, less bitter, more like the scent of a cedar pencil sharpened in a juniper grove. The opening is a shiver of pink pepper and juniper berry: not hot or citrusy, but a cool, almost metallic spice that feels like the first breath after rain in a conifer forest. Within minutes, cypress steps forward - resinous and slightly smoky, like the wood of an old sauna. Vetiver here is not the damp, earthy Haitian root you expect; it’s been distilled into a gauzy, almost transparent greenness, with none of the harsh bitterness that can plague vetiver soliflores. As the heart fades, sandalwood emerges, creamy and pale, softening the composition without sweetening it. The base is surprisingly tenacious: on skin, Sycomore lasts eight to ten hours with a soft but present sillage - close enough for intimacy, loud enough for a dinner party. It performs best in cool weather (spring rain, autumn wind) and works as a signature scent for anyone who prefers their woods unsweetened and their greens smoky.
